To commemorate 20 years of legacy of iconic pop star Leslie Cheung, Olympian City is organising the “Timeless Leslie Encounter” event from 23 March to 2 April 2023, which narrate 20 stories of encounter with “Gor Gor” to help keep his legacy alive. The highlight will be a sharing session on 31 March 2023, during which good friends, collaborators and fans of Leslie Cheung will share their stories of meeting and interacting with the star, and singer Mike Tsang will perform Cheung’s classic song.

Throughout the event period, a 430-inch TV display 20 video clips and a large-scale digital mosaic comprising 3,000 photos related to Leslie Cheung taken by fans. Meanwhile, a neon light wall showcase memorable films and songs chosen by fans, and a self-playing grand piano is looping eight songs. Exhibition of memorabilia including “Leslie Cup”

What was Gor Gor like in person? To answer this question, his close friends, collaborators and fans from both Hong Kong and overseas have been invited to share their encounters with the star and showcase memorabilia in their collections.

One of the objects to be exhibited is the trophy of “Leslie Cup”, a mahjong competition organised by Leslie Cheung in 1993, in which host and DJ Suzie Wong was the winner. In 2021, Wong organised another competition in memory of Cheung and the trophy was awarded to a fan of the singer-actor.

Among the tales to be shared is a kiss given by a die-hard fan to Leslie Cheung at the latter’s birthday party back in the 1980s, which is captured on camera. Another fan got the chance to take wedding photos with her idol in Kowloon Tong as the prize she won in a TV programme. These out-of-the-ordinary encounters were proof of Leslie Cheung’s love for his fans.

Leslie Cheung was not only a local legend, but he was also popular in other parts of the world, especially in Asia, as reflected by the many books released by Korean and Japanese publishers on the Hong Kong star. A super fan from Japan joined a tour in the 1990s to visit the settings of films featuring Leslie Cheung and shook the hand of her idol during a meet-and-greet. The fan, who is an illustrator, later did many drawings of Cheung’s film characters. Meanwhile, a fan from Korea will be taking part in the “Timeless Leslie Encounter” sharing session on 31 March 2023 and explaining how she began to collect Korean publications featuring the pop star in the 1980s and 1990s.

On designated dates, long-time Leslie fans will read out-of-print publications and other collections with the public and share their own stories about Leslie Cheung. Interested parties can visit Olympian City’s Facebook page for registration details.
