EVENT DESCRIPTION

Embark on an extraordinary journey through a century of cinematic brilliance with Restored Treasures – Film Marathon! In honour of the 25th anniversary of the Hong Kong Film Archive, this opening programme presents a splendid selection of meticulously restored local and international classics for your enjoyment.

Prepare to be enchanted by the timeless elegance of The Goddess (1934)(4K Digitally Restored Version), a silent film masterpiece featuring the illustrious Ruan Lingyu, alongside the Archive’s newly completed 4K restoration of director Lung Kong’s acclaimed The Story of a Discharged Prisoner (1967). This marathon celebrates the evolution of cinema, traversing from the silent black-and-white era to the vibrant creativity of contemporary filmmaking.

Immerse yourself in this celebration of light and shadow and experience the timeless allure of film!

The programme also includes two free screenings of documentaries on the work of early film pioneers, the Lumière brothers. Lumière! The Adventure Begins (2016) and Lumière! The Adventure Continues (2024) take audiences back to the nascence of cinema to explore how it became the medium we know and love today.
