May will be a busy and immersive month for art lovers and aficionados!
Among the abundance of happenings, we have selected eight events not to be missed, from flagship festivals such as French May Arts Festival and Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels, art exhibitions by the Sovereign Art Foundation and the Goethe Institut, a concert by Ivana Wong with HK Phil, and a Verdi opera by Opera Hong Kong.
To help you relax from these engaging happenings, we have also selected Calming Spot, a singing bowl experience on the beach.
SELECTION OF EVENTS
The exhibition by French artist of Vietnamese origin showcases a stunning collection of 22 large-format portraits created using a variety of techniques including black stone, charcoal, felt, gouache, oil, ink, and acrylic, and illustrating the artist’s deep commitment to explore the complexity of human emotions.

DANCE REFLECTIONS BY VAN CLEEF & ARPELS FESTIVAL 2023
The festival is taking place in collaboration with the French May Arts Festival in prestigious institutional stages and public spaces across Hong Kong, showcasing nine cutting-edge original pieces and leading repertory productions from a selection of international choreographers and dancers, as well as workshops and a film screening.
5 – 21 May – Various Locations
The festival is back to celebrate its 30th Anniversary. Under the theme PULSARTE, this year’s edition showcases more than hundred programmes between April and June across the city, from music, dance, theatre performances to art exhibitions, immersive experiences, workshops and learning programmes, for adults and children alike.

THE 2023 SOVEREIGN ASIAN ART PRIZE FINALISTS EXHIBITION
The exhibition will feature thirty artists shortlisted for Asia’s most coveted award in contemporary art. This year’s finalists were selected from 165 entrants nominated by over 60 independent professionals and hail from 16 countries and regions across Asia-Pacific. Hong Kong has the strongest representation with 6 artists shortlisted.
10 -18 May – H Queen’s
HK PHIL x IVANA WONG: THE MISSING SOMETHING CONCERT
Ivana Wong has been working on her Total Art project “the missing something”. Coming to the third chapter, “I’m not sure what to go with coffee: Iceland, that piano, or your portrait?” features her new orchestral works performed live by the HK Phil. Ivana will take the role of composer and artist to embark on her poetic, musical journey.
12 & 13 May – Hong Kong City Hall
Filled with love, jealousy and blinding hatred, Il Trovatore is Giuseppe Verdi’s most passionate opera. In this opera in four acts, Verdi combines the dramatic fireworks of the medieval Spain of the story with the lyricism of his native Italy, resulting in one of the composer’s most iconic and memorable works.
11 – 14 May – Hong Kong Cultural Centre
This exhibition is one of the highlights of the 60th anniversary of the Goethe-Institut in Hong Kong. Six German female artists have been invited to share their gaze. In their paintings and sculptures, they explore body images and sensuality, address relationships and memories, and question traditional as well as contemporary gender roles.

With the professional sound healing instructors’ guidance, participants will feel the power of singing bowl sound healing, to connect with the nature and start a journey of calming body and soul under the sunshine and sea breeze.
