The month of October is culturally booming with an abundance of art fairs and festivals in Hong Kong.
We have selected nine major cultural events not to be missed, spanning from fine art and ink art fairs to jazz, opera and electro music festivals, as well as heritage and retro fiestas and exhibitions.
SELECTION OF EVENTS
FINE ART ASIA 2023 and INK ASIA 2023
Fine Art Asia 2023, Asia’s leading international fine art fair, and Ink Asia 2023, the first-ever art fair dedicated to ink art, which is resuming after a three-year hiatus, will be held alongside each other, returning to their normal scale following the pandemic. The fairs will showcase a wide range of artworks, exploring the inextricable relationship between East and West.
5 – 8 October – Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre
The flagship musical event returns on an unprecedented scale, featuring an all-star lineup of more than 500 jazz musicians from 11 countries and regions who will present over 100 performances. This year’s jazz extravaganza promises to be an unforgettable experience for music lovers, transcending cultures, styles and genres.
3 – 8 October – Freespace, WKCD
DIGITAL ART FAIR HONG KONG 2023
Taking place in a new venue at K11 MUSEA, the Digital Art Fair – Asia Edition will see the return of all the fair’s special zones, Prestige, Immersive, Pioneer, Virtual and Inspire, each carefully curated to enhance the fair’s presentation of innovative digital fine art from around the world.
19 – 23 October – Kunsthalle, K11 Art and Cultural Centre, K11 MUSEA
The proceeds of this new fair will be donated to the Hong Kong Art School to support its development and commitment to nurturing aspiring students. Over 200 HKAS alumni and artists will showcase their artworks, including painting, ceramics, installation, photography and video, allowing the public to appreciate a variety of unique art creations.
22 October – 16 November – Hong Kong Arts Centre
BLACK BOX CHINESE OPERA FESTIVAL 2023
The annual festival highlights productions offering new perspectives on the history, evolution and potential future of Chinese opera. Bringing together emerging artists from around the region, the festival inspires and facilitates exchange between practitioners as part of the contemporary network of experimental Chinese opera festivals.
1 – 22 October – Xiqu Centre, WKCD
The boutique festival returns on Cheung Chau island, synonymous with eclectic and forward-thinking artists who push the boundaries of electronic music in a mystical setting that evokes feelings of inclusivity and freedom. This year, a greater focus will be placed on music lifestyle, well- being, family and scenography.
27 – 29 October – Sai Yuen Farm, Cheung Chau Island
HERITAGE FIESTA CUM ROVING EXHIBITION 2023
The Heritage Fiesta features declared monuments and graded historic buildings that are related to greening and landscape. Exhibition, free guided tours, and collection of specially designed stamp prints are also offered on this occasion.
1 October – 30 November – Various locations
The nostalgic bazaar, organised by Hong Kong Tramways, will contain tailor made decorations and an array of activities to display the charm of Hong Kong in the 1980s. Visitors are also invited to dress up in 80s outfits and to exchange old belongings items.
7 & 8 October – Hong Kong Observation Wheel and AIA Vitality Park
