Black Box Chinese Opera Festival 2023

EVENT DESCRIPTION

The annual Black Box Chinese Opera Festival highlights productions offering new perspectives on the history, evolution and potential future of Chinese opera. Bringing together emerging artists from around the region, the festival inspires and facilitates exchange between practitioners as part of the contemporary network of experimental Chinese opera festivals.

This year, alongside the Xiqu Centre’s Cantonese opera original productions Farewell My Concubine (New Adaptation), Wenguang Explores the Valley and The Imperial Decree (Preview), the programme features The Chairs by the Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe and Sister A Da by the Jin Liansheng Gaojia Opera Troupe of Xiamen City.

The festival also includes the Living Heritage Workshop Series – a programme of hands-on xiqu-inspired workshops offering participants the chance to explore traditional crafts and try their hand at making Chinese flower button hairclips and decorative resin-stone brooches.

The Black Box Chinese Opera Festival 2023 is presented by the Xiqu Centre, with the Yam Kim Fai and Pak Suet Sin Charitable Foundation as title sponsor.
