Hong Kong Heritage Museum: Cultural Diversity & Living Legacy
Nestled beside the scenic Shing Mun River in Sha Tin, the Hong Kong Heritage Museum stands as one of the city’s premier cultural landmarks. Operated by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), it offers a dynamic blend of history, art, and contemporary living culture in a modern, family-friendly setting.
HISTORY AND ESTABLISHMENT
The museum first opened its doors on 16 December 2000, becoming a major addition to Hong Kong’s cultural scene. As a purpose-built facility, it was designed to preserve, research, showcase, and interpret the city’s diverse heritage with a strong emphasis on living and creative culture.
Spanning an exhibition area of approximately 7,500 square metres, the museum features six permanent galleries and six thematic galleries for rotating special exhibitions. In its 25+ years, it has welcomed over 15 million visitors (as of July 2025) and hosted more than 200 exhibitions.
