The Art Month is back in town with the two major art fairs Art Basel and Art Central!
ART BASEL
27 – 29 May – Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre
Art Basel Hong Kong returns with hundred and thirty-seven galleries from twenty-eight countries and territories, including sixteen first-time participants, reinforcing once again the show’s position as the leading international art fair in the Asia-Pacific region.
This year’s show will offer dynamic public programs highlighting local artists: Hong Kong-based moving image pioneer Ellen Pau’s new, site-specific moving image work The Shape of Light, co-commissioned by Art Basel and M+, as well as a special tram project with artists Cherie Cheuk Ka-wai, Stephen Wong Chun-hei, and Shum Kwan-yi, commissioned by Art Basel and co-presented by the Hong Kong Tourism Board.
The fair will also feature six large-scale installations presented by select exhibitors, including free-formed work by Hsu Yunghsu, presented by Liang Gallery; Birth of Black Holes, Birth of Geology, Birth of Water by Beijing based artist Bingyi, showcased by Ink Studio; and Hanart TZ Gallery’s presentation of a 40-channel speaker system installation sounding the heartbeat of artist GayBird.
Flowers Gallery will present a work by Movana Chen, while Alisan Fine Arts will show Angel Hui Hoi Kiu’s work reminiscent of Hong Kong’s Goldfish Street, as well as New York-based artist Ming Fay’s Garden of Life.
In celebration of its 10th anniversary, the Hong Kong Art Gallery Association will hold its annual fundraising exhibition at both Art Basel Hong Kong and Art Central, presenting generous donations from twenty-seven galleries, by established and emerging artists, including Roger Ballen, André Brasilier, Vittoria Chierici, Elaine Chiu, Irene Chou, Barbara Edelstein, Chow Chun Fai, Kim Young Hun, Giraffe Leung, Damon Tong, and Wong Sze Wai, to name a few.
ART CENTRAL

Despite ongoing international travel restrictions, Art Central 2022 occupies a significantly larger space than the previous edition and will feature a dynamic group of over fifty galleries with strong representation from Hong Kong-based exhibitors and a record number of homegrown talents, accompanied by a five day programme of talks, performance art, video art and large-scale installations.
Talk programme highlights will include:
– Conceptual artist Mak2 and Hong Kong-based collector Jacobo Garcia Gil about art-making and collecting in the digital era ;
– A look into the cultural institutions, galleries and non-profit organisations that are shaping the arts and culture landscape in Hong Kong, and the minds behind them: S. Alice Mong, Asia Society Hong Kong Center, Antony J. Chan, Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong, Tiffany Pinkstone, Sovereign Art Foundation, and Özge Ersoy, Asia Art Archive.
For the second year, The Sovereign Art Foundation will present an exhibition of finalists from this year’s prestigious Sovereign Asian Art Prize. The finalists hail from sixteen countries and regions across Asia-Pacific, of which Hong Kong has the strongest representation with five artists shortlisted.
From 419 entries, the thirty finalists were shortlisted by a panel of four world-class art specialists, namely: writer, curator, and museum director, David Elliott; artist, curator, and actress, Karena Lam; artist and winner of The 2021 Sovereign Asian Art Prize, Li Binyuan; and Senior Curator, Digital and Heritage at Tai Kwun, Ying Kwok.
The 2022 Sovereign Asian Art Prize winner will be announced on 26 May.
Finally, performance art returns to the fair with debut works by Hong Kong independent artist and creative producer Kiwi Chan, and Hong Kong-based choreographer and performer Joseph Lee.
