31 December 2025 - 30 January 2026
FreeEVENT DESCRIPTION
Yung Ho-Yin, a leading figure in Hong Kong’s calligraphy scene, will hold his first-ever commercial gallery solo exhibition in Hong Kong, titled Un-“Conventional” Calligraphy: Characters at Play—Yung Ho-Yin Solo Exhibition, at Touch Gallery in Tai Kwun, Central, from December 31, 2025 to January 30, 2026.
Curated by veteran Hong Kong art consultant Heiman Ng, this exhibition not only marks a significant milestone in Mr. Yung’s artistic career but also stands as a major event for Hong Kong’s calligraphy art world. Audiences will have the opportunity to appreciate up close his representative works in the “Yung Style,” which masterfully blends profound traditional skill with a unique contemporary aesthetic.
Mr. Yung’s artistic foundation was forged under two masters of Chinese art. In his formative years, he studied painting under the renowned artist Yeung Sin Sum, often hailed as “the last master of the Lingnan School.” From him, Yung absorbed the dynamic interplay of composition, artistic conception, and ink expression. He later became a disciple of Mr. Zhang Hai, former Chairman of the China Calligraphers Association, delving deeply into the essence of calligraphy and honing his technique, compositional skill, and expressive spirit. These two pivotal apprenticeships broadened his vision across painting and calligraphy, laying a solid foundation for works that combine traditional depth with compelling visual tension.
Mr. Yung Ho Yin’s impact extends well beyond his own practice. As a Council Member of the China Calligraphers Association and Chairman of the Chinese Hong Kong Calligraphy Association, he has dedicated himself to advancing the art form through curated exhibitions, lectures, and exchange initiatives. His work strengthens ties between calligraphy communities in Mainland China and Hong Kong, raising local standards of creation and appreciation, and his leadership is widely respected across the field.
His commitment to pedagogy is equally substantive. For years, he has served as an instructor in the Calligraphy Diploma Program at The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies and at The University of Hong Kong’s School of Professional and Continuing Education. Through the systematic transmission of theory and practice, he has inspired and mentored a generation of enthusiasts and emerging practitioners, sowing the seeds for the sustained development of calligraphy education in the city.
In terms of creative achievement, Mr. Yung stands among Hong Kong’s most frequently selected calligraphers for China’s premier national exhibitions. His work has been chosen twice for the National Exhibition of Calligraphy and Seal Carving by Middle-aged and Young Artists, and an exceptional four times for the benchmark National Exhibition of Calligraphy and Seal Carving. Further accolades include selection for the 3rd National Couplet Calligraphy Exhibition, the 4th National Regular Script Exhibition, and the prestigious 3rd China Calligraphy Lanting Award—a testament to the national recognition of his artistic caliber.
Un-“Conventional” Calligraphy: Characters at Play—Yung Ho-Yin Solo Exhibition in Touch Gallery, however, marks his long-awaited debut in a Hong Kong commercial gallery—a consummate presentation distilled from decades of practice. Meticulously conceived, the exhibition offers a public platform to demonstrate his nuanced fusion of traditional calligraphic essence with a contemporary visual lexicon. His works channel innovation through disciplined form, exploring the infinite possibilities of the medium via the modulation of ink and the strategic orchestration of space. “Calligraphy is the unique vessel of our cultural spirit,” Mr. Yung reflects. “This exhibition is an invitation—not only to witness a personal artistic journey but to partake in the profound subtlety and joy inherent in brush and ink, and to feel the resonant vitality of a classical art within our contemporary moment.”
