Artist Statement
Last year I presented the exhibition “Willows Dark Flowers Bright” at H Queen’s. It was an exhibition based on flowers. This year, I am grateful to have the opportunity to present here again. I paint as a way to record my experiences, like a diary. I travel now with my canvas and paint, to Thailand, Malaysia, etc. I continue to paint flowers, adding the moon as an element to show time, and changing weather. I found a collection of paintings I did when I was 12,13 years old, which also showed flowers and the moon. These elements are often used in Chinese Culture to represent family, reunion and happiness. For half a century, I have kept a positive attitude in life that helps me pull through the difficult time.
This year in the Lunar calendar we have double spring, a very auspicious year. During this exhibition, we will experience a double second month of the year. The song “Flowers Good Moon Round”, was written in the 1930’s. I remember hearing it as a child, and you still hear it performed nowadays. The first lyrics says “Stormy clouds disappear, the moon shines on earth”. I wish this on the post COVID Hong Kong, a City I love dearly.
This exhibition will feature about 10 works never shown before from the 1970’s, when I was a secondary school student, alongside about 20 plus new paintings. I hope that viewers will see my love for the Chinese culture and my infatuation with flowers and the moon.
