EVENT DESCRIPTION

As a key highlight of the splendid Swire Properties Arts Month, Pacific Place is honoured to play host to an extraordinary art installation from the first offsite Encounters of Art Basel Hong Kong, marking the sector’s first foray into the public realm outside of the fair. With Swire Properties being the Host Partner of Art Basel Hong Kong, the collaboration will bring the world premiere of the artwork Gravity, at Pacific Place from 17 March to 2 April.

Pacific Place strives to bring together art enthusiasts, shoppers and visitors to enjoy authentic art experiences by making art more accessible and continuing to foster artistic and cultural dialogue within the community. Showcasing Gravity in the open plaza of Pacific Place invites onlookers to take a different route from their everyday life and come together.

Unexpected moments of Encounter – Gravity

Gravity, created by renowned Los Angeles-based conceptual artist Awol Erizku, has been selected as one of the 14 large-scale sculptures under the theme ‘This present, moment’ for the Encounters sector of Art Basel Hong Kong, curated by Alexie Glass-Kantor, Executive Director of Artspace, Sydney and the curator for the Australian pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale.

The 10-metre-tall Gravity is modelled after the identifiable figure of King Tutankhamun, who was known for being a symbol of divine omniscience, ancestral wisdom and his unprecedented influence, from antiquity to present. The sculpture’s playfulness invites onlookers to take a detour from their usual route. It speaks to forms timelessness by subverting ideas of presence, bringing monuments that existed in history to life.

Immersing in the Mastermind of Awol Erizku

Erizku is a multidisciplinary artist who is distinguished for his unique visual language and distinctive iconography, whose artworks draw from references spanning urban culture to the art historical canon. As visitors walk through the tunnel of Gravity, Erizku invites audiences to join him on his journey, a one-of-a-kind experience through the engagement in global and cultural contexts, to immerse in his inspirations where timeless memories and wisdom seamlessly intertwine.
