EVENT DESCRIPTION
Featuring an array of award-winning animations from all around the world, MOViE MOViE anifest 2023 will be held from 18 August to 9 September 2023 at MOViE MOViE Pacific Place, MOViE MOViE Cityplaza and PREMIERE ELEMENTS. In addition to showcasing great animated works from abroad, the festival will also screen award-winning local animated works from the 10th Animation Support Program as well as selections from its past decade to celebrate the program’s 10th anniversary. Audiences will have a chance to interact with talented local animators and learn the art of animation together.

HK Premiere of Opening film BLUE GIANT is an adaptation of Shinichi Ishizuka’s award-winning manga featuring a soundtrack by renowned jazz musician Hiromi Uehara! The story follows a saxophone prodigy as he chases his jazz dream and forms an ensemble.
HK Premiere of Closing film ROBOT DREAMS is the winner of Annecy International Animation Film Festival’s Contrechamp Grand Prix. Goya-Award-winning director Pablo Berger’s first venture into animation is a colourful, vibrant and touching buddy drama.
HK Premiere of a labour of love of seven years by Golden Rooster-winning animation director Tian Xiaoping, DEEP SEA wowed audiences at the Berlin International Film Festival, Tribeca Festival and Shanghai International Film Festival with its vivid vision of a young girl’s adventure into a fantasy realm in the sea.
● Well-received at the European Union Film Festival, the most expensive Czech animated film of all time, and the winner of Best Animated Film at both the Czech Lion Award and the Shanghai Film Festival, EVEN MICE BELONG IN HEAVEN combines stop-motion and 3D animation to bring its imaginative story to life.
Katsuhiro Otomo’s all-time sci-fi classic AKIRA, winner of the Silver Scream Award in Imagine Film Festival, has been restored in 4K 35 years after its debut. The prescient thriller not only pioneered the cyberpunk genre, but it also predicted the postponement of the Tokyo Olympics.
Winner of Best Screenplay at the Yokohama Film Festival and Best Theatrical Feature Film at World Animation Celebration, Mamoru Oshii’s 1995 visionary sci-fi thriller GHOST IN THE SHELL has been restored in 4K. Using Hong Kong as the blueprint for its backdrop, the film examines the relationship between human existence, ego, and soul.
Premiered at Busan International Film Festival, dinosaur adventure MY TYRANO: TOGETHER, FOREVER is a joint production between South Korea, Japan and China. It brings together the talents of director Kōbun Shizuno (the Detective Conan series) and late Oscar-nominated musician Ryuichi Sakamoto.
Based on the manga of the same name by Leiji Matsumoto(Galaxy Express 999) and voiced by Shun Oguri, Haruma Miura, Yu Aoi and Miyuki Sawashiro, SPACE PIRATE CAPTAIN HARLOCK (3D) won the Lumiere Japan Grand Prix Award from the International 3D Society Japan Committee and was nominated for Best Animation at the 37th Japan Film Awards. The space opera follows a harrowing journey to save humankind.
THE 10TH ANIMATION SUPPORT PROGRAM WINNERS SHOWCASE features award-winning animations from the much-lauded Animation Support Program (ASP). Talented Hong Kong animators have brought us 14 artful, ground-breaking animations of vastly different genres and art styles, including the Gold Prize-winning short MONSOON BLUE; FRANKIE, which explores the relationship between an uncle and his nephew; and cheerful musical LET’S PARTY UNTIL THE END.
● To celebrate the tenth anniversary of ASP, there are two ASP 10TH ANNIVERSARY SHOWCASE programs featuring past ASP masterpieces that represent the best of Hong Kong animation. Award-winning works ANOTHER WORLD and DRAGON’S DELUSION will kick off the show, followed by LIONVERSE, DEPTHS OF NIGHTS and many more.
