EVENT DESCRIPTION

Ramesh Meyyappan Scotland-based Singaporean, renowned theatre-maker, director and actor, presents a poignant tale of love, loss, memory and longing, for those who struggle to understand and be understood.

Harry has dementia. He also uses sign language. As he moves into a new carehome, he is accompanied by memories that dance like ghosts around him. Events from the past seem newly present, and when a visit from his wife rekindles their love he imagines they are young and together again. Harry’s carer provides him with some solace, but as the determined nurse begins to learn Harry’s sign language, he begins to forget it, leaving him in a unique world where he must confront the only thing that remains – himself.

Love Beyond is a beautiful, tender and visually creative show devised and performed by award-winning physical storyteller Ramesh Meyyappan, and directed by Matthew Lenton. Skillfully staged, with artful use of mirrors, projections and sound reflecting Harry’s disorientated mind, the performance depicts the anguish of miscommunication and dementia in a profoundly affecting way.

Love Beyond incorporates BSL, visual language and oral dialogue. The absence of subtitles is an artistic choice intended to present an equal experience for deaf and hearing audiences. The production received five nominations and the Best Music and Sound awards in the 2023 Critics’ Awards for Theatre in Scotland.
