EVENT DESCRIPTION

A new perspective of lifestyle initiated by THE SHOPHOUSE, otherthings denotes unnameable objects, ones which immerse themselves in everyday moments. First initiated in 2021, otherthings takes its physical form in 2024 within a refurbished 1890s Hakka-style building in Tai Hang, through a selection of commodities, books, objects and art. Such pieces are presented in seasonal rotation, offering an integrated lifestyle experience by reconsidering the art in everyday life. otherthings is the analogue response to a transient digital world in which pause, and sensibility, have been lost to fast-paced visual stimulation.

To celebrate the launch of otherthings’ first physical space, we are pleased to present its inaugural exhibition “EX TERRA”, featuring a new body of ceramics works by Japanese artist Kansai Noguchi (born in 1982, Fukuoka,JP). Drawing inspiration from Japanese Jomon pottery, Korean Yi Dynasty ceramics, and ancient Greek sculpture, the artist explores the compatibility between simplicity and abstract expression by merging his pioneering glazing techniques with classical aesthetics.

“EX TERRA” highlights works crafted from clay sourced from the mountains, pearls from the sea, and ‘nikawa’ glue pigments made by animal leather and bones, contemplating the origins and struggles between nature and humanity.
