EVENT DESCRIPTION
Lingnan University and the Hong Kong Art School, funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, proudly present the Jockey Club ICH+ Innovative Heritage Education Programme 2023/24 ICH+ Festival. The event, held at the Jao Tsung-I Academy, celebrates over 300 inspiring works of innovative craftsmanship created by master artisans and students. This fascinating exhibition is accompanied by an art fair, game booths, and workshops featuring traditional crafts. By engaging with and experiencing the rich heritage of Hong Kong’s intangible cultural assets the public can come to a deeper understanding and appreciation of how they give substance and value.
This year’s education programme encompasses Shiwan Pottery Making, Hong Kong Cheongsam Making, and Seal Carving. The main exhibition hall showcases the artistic achievements of students participating in five ICH items, highlighting the deep cultural significance of traditional crafts when combined with the students’ inventive interpretation. The work on display reflects the efforts of masters, contemporary artists, 15 programme trainees and 200 students from 74 secondary schools. Their pieces embody the fusion of tradition and modernity, breathing new life into traditional crafts.
The festival also showcases the works of various craftsmen, demonstrating the integration of traditional crafts into everyday life, blending ancient skills and ICH traditions with modern ideas and new approaches. To enhance public engagement, the eleven themed game booths highlight elements of traditional Hong Kong crafts and provide a deeper understanding of craft culture. The ICH+ Festival also offers workshops on traditional crafts such as Guangcai making, paper cutting, dough figurine crafting, blown sugar, galvanised iron products making, and steamer making. These are free and open to the public. Participants are encouraged to create their own craft pieces and experience the joy of craftsmanship firsthand. The festival offers a fresh and interactive craft experience while paying tribute to local masters of traditional crafts, emphasising the significant benefit of combining heritage with innovation.
