EVENT DESCRIPTION
The Francophonie Festival is an annual event celebrating the French language and francophone cultures. Celebrated around the world in March, the Francophonie Festival returns to Hong Kong from March 1st to 31st, 2026 for a special edition on the theme of “Anticipation”, with numerous events to reflect together on the world that lies ahead.
Francophonie refers to the group of people and institutions for which French is the primary language, language of use or administrative language. According to the latest report from the Observatoire de la langue française in 2026, there are 321 million French speakers on five continents. French is the 5th most widely spoken language in the world, after Mandarin, English, Spanish and Arabic. It is also the third most widely used language in the business world.
In Hong Kong, many institutions teach French, including the Alliance française de Hong Kong (more than 6,000 students a year), the Lycée Français International (2,900 students), as well as universities and local and international schools. There are an estimated 15,000 learners of French in Hong Kong. The Francophonie Festival in Hong Kong, as well as other events organised throughout the year, offer cultural activities to a local public interested in the French language, France and French-speaking countries.
The Francophonie Festival in Hong Kong is organised by the French-speaking Consulates (France, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada and the Quebec Office) in collaboration with the Alliance Française de Hong Kong, the Lycée Français International, the French-speaking bookshop Parenthèses, and the Association of Teachers of French as a Foreign Language in Hong Kong and Macao.
The activities organised cover a wide range of fields: exhibitions, film festivals, conferences, music concerts, public speaking competitions, improvisation shows, sports competitions, food fairs and board game festivals. These events will take place all over Hong Kong, most of them free and open to all. The events are aimed at everyone: French speakers and non-French speakers alike.
