Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra: Music About China
28 February - 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm
$140 – $480EVENT DESCRIPTION
Since 2007, the Hong Kong Arts Festival and the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra have co-presented the “Music About China” series, celebrating China’s cultural diversity through sound. Composer Marcel Wengler from Luxembourg spent five years composing Chinese Rhapsody, blending Eastern and Western styles in a vibrant tribute. This work is followed by young Chinese composer Li Bochan’s Three Pieces of Kunqu Opera, which re-imagines classic excerpts using evocative timbres and rhythms.
The final work in this concert is the Hong Kong premiere of Rhapsody of String Puppets by the HKCO’s Artistic Director and Principal Conductor for Life, Yan Huichang, commissioned by the Shaanxi Broadcasting National Traditional Orchestra. Multi-instrumentalist Wang Kun will dazzle with a solo performance on seven traditional instruments, including the pixianhu, drum and clapper. Merging contemporary orchestration, regional opera and folk artistry, the series continues to serve as a showcase of bold innovation and cross-cultural dialogue.
