EVENT DESCRIPTION

Following the performance of PassagesFragments, a film by Noé Soulier explores movement when it is confronted with the framing of the camera lens.  It continues the research on movement that the choreographer has been carrying out since 2010.

The particular spaces that framing sets up, according to its height and dimensions, enables aspects of movement which would otherwise be invisible onstage to be explored. Thus, the spectator is able to gain access to a level of detail, in the articulation of the different parts of the body and in the superposition of the dancers, which cannot exist during an onstage representation due to the single viewpoint which it offers. It is this ability to visually isolate certain parts of the body, laden with multiple affects that Fragments aims to show, both on and off-camera. The piece is a unique exploration of the fragmentary dimension of the body and what it is capable of evoking.

ABOUT THE ARTIST / ORGANISER

French dancer and choreographer Noé Soulier was trained at CNSMD in Paris, Canada’s National Ballet School and P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels. He participated in the Pavillon artist-in-residence program at the Palais de Tokyo, and won first prize at the 2010 Danse Élargie competition, an event organized by Théâtre de la Ville and the Musée de la Danse.

His work explores dance and choreography through a multitude of devices and environments. His productions Removing and Faits et Gestes, Second Quartet, created for the L.A. Dance Project and Les Vagues, stimulate bodily memory through movements directed at non-existent objects and events. He developed these same principles in his book Actions, Mouvements et Gestes, as well as his performance Mouvement sur Mouvement.

In the choreographed exhibition Performing Art, created at Centre Pompidou, museum professionals become the performers, executing careful and delicate movements to hang and install a selection of artwork from the collection of the Parisian institution. Noé Soulier has been head of the National Center for Contemporary Dance in Angers since 2020.
