EVENT DESCRIPTION
Eric So, transitioning from an advertising professional in the 90s, embarked on a journey as an artist and creator in the realms of art and multimedia. He explored new horizons, from hosting art exhibitions to venturing into differentinnovative fields. His groundbreaking “The Art of Bruce Lee” exhibition propelled him beyond Hong Kong’s borders, gaining recognition worldwide.
Post-2000, he embraced action figures as a medium for his artistic expression, unleashing a plethora of creative ideas. With his adept sculpting skills and distinctive cartoon design style, he skilfully merged these two disparate elements in his works, giving birth to the term “Designer Toy.”
Beyond figure creation, he spearheaded trends and engaged in cross-border, cross-disciplinary collaborations, including art exhibitions, streetwear fashion, album packaging, and stage design. He embodied the belief that “life needs art, and art is ubiquitous,” embracing a humanistic approach to existence.
From inception to the present, his works have emerged in various corners of the world, collaborating with international brands. Eric’s unique and understated artistic style has captivated numerous celebrities, leading to stylized “Artion Figures” created exclusively for them.
Thanks to his captivating series of works, Eric So has become widely known as “So Fun,” a testament to the fusion of his personality and artistic creations.
In his artistic endeavors, Eric So seamlessly blends commerce within the realm of art, allowing art to counterbalance the dominance of commercial rationality. This harmonious coexistence reflects the elegant interplay of Yin and Yang, an essential concept in Chinese philosophy.
Today, Eric So is a full-time artist and the Creative Director of Papamamason. With Hong Kong as his creative core, he disseminates his unique artistic thoughts and creations to the world.
In recent years, he has focused on art creation, including his solo exhibition titled “Lost . Singularity” held in Tokyo, Japan. Employing rice paper and collage techniques, his works abstractly express concreteness. By blurring and eliminating lines of classic cartoon characters, he constructs layers of collaged color blocks. Through natural color rendering and abstract methods, he challenges viewers’ perceptions of image existence.
Additionally, he collaborated with Bonhams in Hong Kong for the exhibition “The Storyteller.” Employing realistic techniques, his works depict visual games on the back of the canvas. With meticulous classical realism, he portrays modern cartoon characters with uniform coloring and absolute flatness. This exhibition flawlessly merges seemingly extreme styles of pop culture and classical art.
In the exhibition “在山上看着大海對岸的妳,” Eric utilizes ceramics as a medium, crafting unique pottery works. Through minimalist forms and intuitive compositions, he creates a spiritual haven. Simultaneously, his works convey the coexistence of mountains and the sea, symbolizing genuine emotional interactions between “you,” “me,” and “them.” This portrayal and expression of the essence of things prompt viewers to contemplate their own selves.
