The West Kowloon Cultural District (WestK) joins hands with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra (HKCO) to present a brand-new programme Chinese Tea and Music. Audiences will immerse themselves in the charm of traditional literati enjoying tea and music at the Tea House Theatre in the Xiqu Centre of WestK. The programme will take place on two weekends on 26 April and 31 May 2025, where participants will indulge in a multi-sensory experience blending Chinese classical music and the aroma of tea, appreciating the aesthetics and elegance of Chinese culture and the beauty of artistic integration. Such unique cultural experience is a must for art lovers and visitors to Hong Kong. Tickets for the programme are now available on the WestK website.

Chinese Tea and Music will be held at the Xiqu Centre’s iconic Tea House Theatre, which is designed with inspiration from traditional Chinese teahouses and provides the ideal setting for an immersive experience blending traditional Chinese tea and music. Musicians from the HKCO will perform a string quintet featuring several classic Chinese music pieces, including A Joyful Evening, May Our Love Be Forever, Leaping Dragon, Three Variations of Yangguan and Thunder in a Drought. From whispered silk-string harmonies to thunderous melodies, the music will lead the audience through the intricate layers and tensions of Chinese orchestral music.
Experts offer multi-faceted guide for audiences to Chinese tea culture and the integration of tea art and Chinese music
In addition, the programme will feature experts from various backgrounds, taking the audience on a journey exploring the traditional Chinese tea culture, and the beauty of blending tea art and Chinese music. Lu Yuanyuan, tea master from Lintong Tea, the programme’s Supporting Partner, will demonstrate traditional tea brewing techniques on-site. Lu will pair different kinds of Chinese tea with the music pieces. Through meticulous brewing methods, she will showcase the layering of tea infusion, leading the audience to experience the charm of integrating tea aroma and melodies. Tea culture expert Dr Frankie Yeung Wai-shing, Chairman of the Xiqu Centre Advisory Panel and Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, will share insights into the historical connections between tea art and Hong Kong culture and conduct a live demonstration. Dr Xu Ran from HKCO will serve as the narrator deconstructing the cultural connotations of the pieces, and explore how music and tea art intertwine, revealing the interesting connections of traditional Chinese music and tea culture.
