Chantal Stoman: Nouvelle Vague

21 May - 21 June

Free

EVENT DESCRIPTION

Chantal Stoman will be in Hong Kong from 21 May to 21 June for a complete artistic journey, which includes her solo exhibition with La Galerie, two film projections, and a month-long artist residency for a film shooting project with Alliance Française.

Nouvelle Vague 新浪潮 pays tribute to the French New Wave art film movement of the late 1950s, which rejected traditional filmmaking to explore narrative and existential themes in a documentary style. This exhibition presents a retrospective of Stoman’s series, including:

  • Nouvelle Vague
  • Visiting Paris
  • Tokyo Trip
  • Copacabana
  • New Orleans
  • Suntory

Stoman’s work uses accessories to create contexts that enhance character interactions, resulting in cinematic images rich in personality. Her art reveals the complex relationships between characters and their reflections, inviting viewers to engage with the narratives she presents.

Chantal Stoman gives us a spectacular fusion between her seductive expertise as a fashion photographer and the true depth of her artistic narrative. Her photographs are like short films. They explore the elusive beauty that makes a film scene or a moment in life vibrate.

ABOUT THE ARTIST / ORGANISER

Chantal Stoman is a French photographer and filmmaker based in Paris.
She spent her early years as a fashion photographer. In 2005, after a decade of collaborating with the fashion industry, she began a new chapter with art photography projects.

Her recent work seems far removed from fashion, but it retains traces of the skills she honed in her early years, a special vision.
