Sotheby’s Hong Kong Autumn Sales 2023 Exhibition

IN CELEBRATION OF 50 YEARS IN ASIA, SOTHEBY’S UNVEILS FURTHER KEY HIGHLIGHTS FROM HONG KONG 2023 AUTUMN SALES.

In celebration of 50 extraordinary years in Asia, Sotheby’s Hong Kong is honoured to present a distinguished selection of works by Western and Eastern masters in our prestigious Evening Sale this October. This spectacular collection is led by Gerhard Richter’s Abstraktes Bild, a masterwork from 1994 belonging to a series of works which, having debuted at the artist’s acclaimed Anthony d’Offay Gallery exhibition, now reside in prominent institutional collections around the world.

To coincide with the preview exhibition of the Hong Kong Autumn Sales Series, 18 remarkable works from the upcoming New York sales this November will also go on view alongside. Among those travelling are five seminal paintings from the collection of Emily Fisher Landau – one of the greatest patrons and collectors of the 20th century – all of which will go on public view for the first ever time in Asia. They include Pablo Picasso’s portrait of his “golden muse” Marie-Thérèse Walter which, carrying an estimate of excess of US$120m, is among the most valuable works to have ever been exhibited in the region.

Bringing a compelling visual impact to this season’s auction scene is a 1968 lustrous splashed-colour landscape by Zhang Daqian, Verdant Mountains of Summer Spirit, from an American private collection, which belonged to insurance tycoon Cornelius Vander Starr (1892-1968), before being bestowed upon K.K. Tse (1907-1998).
