EVENT DESCRIPTION

Asia Art Archive (AAA) presents a new exhibition for Hong Kong’s Art Month, In Our Own Backyard, that delves into the creative impulses and forms of gathering within the women’s movements in South Asia from the 1980s onwards, through the archives of artists Sheba Chhachhi and Lala Rukh. The exhibition will be on view at AAA’s library from 20 March to 30 August. Additionally, AAA and the International Program of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, invite prominent Lahore-based artist, educator, and art historian, Salima Hashmi, as our distinguished speaker for the Annual Artist’s Lecture on Thursday, 27 March. The exhibition and lecture are both open to the public free of charge. These events are part of AAA’s research initiative on gender in art history, highlighting narratives that emphasise communities and exchanges within the cultural field.

In Our Own Backyard explores the creative impulses and forms of gathering within the women’s movements in South Asia from the 1980s onward. Developed as a collaboration between AAA’s Hong Kong and New Delhi teams, the exhibition engages the personal archives of artists Sheba Chhachhi and Lala Rukh—who played vital roles as organisers and documenters—showcasing their archival materials and artworks alongside contributions from a diverse community of feminist practitioners and organisations in the region.
