EVENT DESCRIPTION
Mao Weitao, a three-time winner of the China Theatre Plum Blossom Award returns to the Hong Kong stage after 10 years, headlining the Zhejiang Xiaobaihua Yue Opera Troupe’s latest Yue opera production, Su Shi.
The brand new work is a stage adaptation of the life of Song dynasty scholar Su Shi, one of the most celebrated poets in Chinese history. Despite a turbulent life of personal upheaval and career struggles, Su maintained an open-minded outlook and his creative spirit, turning his pain and joy into immortal proses that resonate through time. Helmed by the renowned playwright He Jiping and director Roy Szeto, the production stars Mao Weitao in the titular role, and vividly portrays the legendary author’s talent, charisma and resilience through a combination of traditional Yue opera techniques and modern theatrical elements.
The Zhejiang Xiaobaihua Yue Opera Troupe, with an all-female cast, is one of China’s premier xiqu troupes. As the Honorary President and Artistic Director of the Zhejiang Xiaobaihua Yue Opera Theatre, Mao Weitao’s headlining turn in Su Shi is a much-anticipated theatre event.
This programme is co-presented by the China Theatre Association and WestK, and is part of the 5th Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Chinese Theatre Cultural Festival.
In addition to Su Shi, the Zhejiang Xiaobaihua Yue Opera Troupe will present two other productions: Birthday Celebration by Five Daughters and The New Butterfly Lovers.
