EVENT DESCRIPTION
Despite their differences, science and arts are linked by a common thread of creative thinking. The Absolutely Fabulous Theatre Connection (AFTEC) will showcase the outcomes of Vitruvian Bridge: Arts x Science Minds, a practice-as-research project to the public on May 18 to 19 (Saturday to Sunday) at the Sheung Wan Civic Centre. Using DNA as a theme, two artists Margaret Chu and Priscilla Chu, along with scientist Simon Shiu showcase artworks inspired by their cross-disciplinary collaboration at the DnAesthetics exhibition, igniting the public’s imagination. Moreover, the exhibition offers free interactive workshops that provide an opportunity for both adults and children to explore the creative processes used by artists and scientists and to create their own DNA-inspired artworks.
Vitruvian Bridge: Arts x Science Minds draws inspiration from Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man, created during the Renaissance 500 years ago. This iconic human figure represents the convergence of arts and science, reflecting Da Vinci’s dual role as both an artist and a scientist. While modern education systems continue to separate the arts and sciences, AFTEC’s Vitruvian Bridge: Arts x Science Minds aims to explore why Da Vinci’s idea of cross-disciplinary integration is more crucial to the progress of humanity now than ever before.
Vitruvian Bridge: Arts x Science Minds is a practice-as-research project, bringing together stakeholders from diverse sectors including arts, science, and academic research to forge connections, facilitate bridges between professionals and the broader public, discover opportunities for creativity, and identify fresh perspectives and insights to advance creative learning.
The outcomes of Vitruvian Bridge: Arts x Science Minds will be presented in an exhibition. This complimentary exhibition, titled DnAesthetics, features artists Margaret Chu and Priscilla Chu, along with scientist Simon Shiu, exhibiting artworks inspired by their cross-disciplinary collaboration. Scientist Simon Shiu, typically engaged with DNA research in laboratories and on computers, will introduce an innovative personal interpretation of a DNA model, aimed at broadening the imaginations of the audience. Through the project, artist Priscilla Chu has discovered that the process of DNA replication bears a close resemblance to composing music through the repetition and variation techniques of musical ideas. She plans to convey the inspiration she derived from DNA through music and video projections. Inspired by the structure of DNA, artist Margaret Chu will create abstract kinetic sculptures, which will be augmented by reflective installations and lighting, creating a unique visual impact for the exhibition.
Additionally, there are two complimentary interactive workshops taking place at the same venue, organised into sessions for the general public and families with children, and are appropriate for attendees aged six and older, including college students with interests in arts or science, educators, families, general public members, artists, scientists, among others. On-site, the artists and the scientist will guide participants in creating their own DNA-inspired artworks.
