EVENT DESCRIPTION
This June, the acclaimed Yangju Opera Institute of Yangzhou presents the original production Officer Zheng Banqiao, a performance inspired by the life of a Qing Dynasty artist and scholar. Based on folk anecdotes about the life of Zheng, an upright official with a talent for poetry, calligraphy and painting, the light-hearted, humorous tale paints a colourful portrait of a popular local figure and offers insight into the history and culture of the Yangzhou region of Jiangsu.
Officer Zheng Banqiao is an award-winning production that premiered in 2023. It features a libretto by renowned scriptwriter Luo Zhou and direction by Han Jianying. The production is recommended by the Plum Blossom Award Art Troupe of the China Theatre Association and part of this year’s Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Chinese Theatre Cultural Festival.
Yangju is a heritage form of Chinese opera that originated in Yangzhou, Jiangsu and was traditionally popular in Shanghai and Anhui.
On Sunday 30 June, the Yangju Opera Institute of Yangzhou also presents the showcase performance A Master Selection of Yangju Excerpts.
