Oi! Street Art Space: A Cultural Canvas in Hong Kong

Located in the vibrant district of North Point, Oi! Street Art Space is not only a cultural venue but also a reflection of Hong Kong’s rich history and its dynamic evolution, balancing heritage preservation with modern creativity.

The complex was built in 1908 to serve as the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club headquarters and clubhouse until 1938. Following land reclamation after World War II, the building was used as staff quarters for the Government Supplies Department.

In the 1990s, the building attracted artists and creative teams, and became the Oil Street Artist Village. After the artists were evicted in the 2000s, the buildings were used as a storehouse of the Antiquities and Monuments Office until 2007. Later on, the Hong Kong government recognised the building’s potential as a cultural venue. Allocated to the Art Promotion Office for revitalisation and restoration, the red-bricked Grade II historic building complex was renamed Oi! and opened to the public in 2013.

The renovation preserved the original architectural features while adapting the space for contemporary use. The transformation was not merely structural, it aimed to create an inclusive environment for the artists and the community. Oi! further expanded in 2022, integrating an adjacent outdoor space to the original premises.

Oi! Street Art Space was developed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) with the aim to promote urban creativity and foster a dialogue between artists and the community. By providing a platform for local and international artists, it seeks to cultivate an appreciation for street art, which often challenges societal norms and provokes thought.

To foster creativity, collaboration and visibility of homegrown artists, Oi! designed various initiatives and programs, such as exhibitions, workshops, artist residencies, collaborative projects, public art initiatives and community engagement.

Oi! provides a platform for local artists to showcase their work through curated exhibitions. The space also emphasises education, offering workshops and programs that invite participation from artists and public. Through these initiatives, Oi! strives to break down barriers and make art a communal experience.

The space offers residency programs where local artists can work in a supportive environment. Oi! also encourages collaboration among artists by facilitating group projects and installations.

By involving local residents in art-making processes, Oi! helps artists to connect with the community. This engagement often leads to projects that reflect local culture and address social issues.
