Wing Shya and Mateusz Kolek: We Don’t Make the Decisions

ZtoryTeller, following their involvement in curating the “Chaos” exhibition in Taipei last month, showcased the works of Hong Kong photography master Wing Shya over the years, receiving successful responses. This time, ZtoryTeller returns from Taipei to Hong Kong, with Wing Shya collaborating with Polish artist Mateusz Kolek, who previously received great acclaim at the Manggha Museum in Krakow, Poland. The two will hold the “We Don’t Make the Decisions” exhibition for the first time at ztoryhome from September 20 to October 20.

“We Don’t Make the Decisions” not only showcases photos by Wing Shya and works by Mateusz Kolek separately, but also includes unique pieces that combine the artistic styles of both artists. The exhibition also features a series of Pop-up products by Polish sustainable fashion designer Pat Guzik, who integrates distinctive illustrations into clothing, advocating for sustainable fashion design principles by using environmentally friendly, organic, or recycled materials in both materials selection and production. On the night of September 20th, there will also be a Pop-up Bar event featuring Glass Gardener HK, who specializes in using locally sourced fresh vegetables. Each specialty cocktail is inspired by different artworks, making it a must-visit for those who enjoy cocktails while appreciating art.

When you are exhausted, have you ever experienced your mind and body suddenly starting to relax? You are not asleep, but in a gap between reality and dreams. Some strange and interesting things and scenes suddenly appear in your mind. Sometimes, our inner selves unconsciously make decisions for us, and in seemingly coincidental moments, this situation is all about serendipity, where inspiration and creations come into being.

“We Don’t Make the Decisions” exhibition is based on the shared belief of two artists, fate has brought them together – it is all written in the stars. The exhibition showcases for the first time the works that blend those of Wing and Mateusz, capturing the moments unintentionally clicked by the shutter, along with inspirations sprouting from the subconscious, merging reality with fantasy.

For Wing, the people, events, and objects captured in the photos exhibited are all recorded unconsciously by clicking the shutter. He will showcase the moments of light and shadow captured throughout his life, especially the enchanting Hong Kong through his camera. On the other hand, Mateusz presents familiar urban backgrounds with saturated colors and novel perspectives, creating an atmosphere that transcends reality, allowing people to discover unprecedented emotions. Scenes like Goldfish Street and the Star Ferry, which we are accustomed to, become sources of dreamlike creations in Mateusz’s eyes.
