EVENT DESCRIPTION

Curated by Hong Kong designer, educator, and founder of CCS Interior Design Studio, Clement Cheng, the exhibition titled When Art Meets Horse will be presented at Tai Kwun during 23-29 May 2026. The project brings together creators from diverse disciplines, using Hong Kong’s rich horse racing culture as a starting point, it transforms symbols and elements traditionally associated with racetracks, stables, and jockeys into four works that intriguingly integrate artistic depth with meticulous technical execution – offering a multidisciplinary exploration of speed, power, craftsmanship, and everyday aesthetics. To mark the occasion, a grand opening cocktail reception was held on 22 May, 2026, with notable guests including Minchen Lin, Ayla Sham, Stephanie Au, Cecilia Yeung, JW, and Zac Purton in attendance. Minchen Lin also took part in the evening fireside chat as a special guest, contributing to the vibrant atmosphere.

When Art Meets Horse is not merely a design series or exhibition, it is a proposition for imagining the future of Hong Kong’s culture. The artworks and behind-the-scenes creative process will debut at Tai Kwun in Central during 23-29 May 2026, before touring internationally. Clement hopes that this exhibition will help promote Hong Kong as a city that hosts both major international art events and world-class horse racing. He envisions more cross-disciplinary interactions in the future to attract local audiences, international visitors, and diverse communities, further enhancing the city’s cultural experience and global image.

This series brings together artists from three regions, including the local interior design team CCS led by Clement, Korean installation artist Daun Jeong, and Japanese furniture designer and craftsman Tatsushige Nakamura. The series also feature a collaboration with legendary Hong Kong jockey Zac Purton, drawing inspiration from his professional career and pre-race rituals to create one of the artworks, The ZP Chair. Together, they draw from elements such as jockey silks, whips, stable structures, horseshoes, and pre-race rituals, constructing a narrative that extends from the racetrack into everyday living spaces—translating the dynamism and storytelling of horse racing into art and design.

The four core works in the series include: “Deconstructed Silks”, “The Stall Screen”, “The Horseshoe Ring Table”, and “The ZP Chair”. From material, design to function, each piece is not simply a representation of horse racing elements, but a reinterpreted expression through design translation and artistic reconstruction. A mindfully crafted piece of furniture paired with a lively decoration enhances the overall work.

For this exhibition, Clement also specially collaborated with acclaimed Hong Kong Best Actress awardee and ceramic artist Karena Lam to present her ceramic works alongside the series. Her work is integrated within the horseshoe rings of the coffee table to symbolize luck and victory, adding warmth and artistic character into the artwork, and further enriching the atmosphere of the exhibition space.
