Embark on a heartwarming journey with the beloved Moomins as they celebrate 80 years of timeless charm!
Celebrating the 80th anniversary of The Moomins, global festivities will take place from now until the end of 2025. These events revisit Tove Jansson’s first Moomin story, The Moomins and the Great Flood, highlighting its comforting themes of warmth and safety for all seeking refuge, and embracing the universal value of “The door of Moomin house is always open for you”. The Hong Kong exhibition marks a key milestone in the 80th-anniversary overseas art series. Featuring seven precious works shipped directly from Finland and original 1960s Moomin plush toys, the exhibition will present over 70 cherished pieces in two phases, showcasing Tove Jansson’s enchanting creations. Visitors can also enjoy interactive giant installations and explore tribute artworks by invited artists, celebrating the eight decades of Moomins accompanying generations worldwide.
First Phase of The Exhibition Showcases Seven Original Moomin Illustrations Specially Transported From Finland, Along With Early 1960s First-Edition Moomin Plush Toys
These seven rare illustrations, preserved in Tove Jansson’s Helsinki studio scrapbooks, were created using lithographic printing, a technique that had just gained popularity in the 1960s. Tove believed in teaching children about high-quality art from an early age and ensuring they had access to genuine works by artists. As a result, she published Moomin illustrations in affordable newspapers. However, the initial batch, printed with only three to six colors, was limited to 1,500 copies, making them extremely rare today. Additionally, the exhibition features early 1960s Moomin plush toys designed by Atelier Fauni and transported from Finland. These were among the first Moomin products released by the Finnish department store Stockmann. Visitors can admire the original four velvet styles up close, gaining insight into the early Moomin universe.
Tribute Paintings by Artists from Hong Kong, Macau, and Indonesia
The exhibition will also feature tribute artworks from various artists, including local artists Lai Tat Tat Wing, b.wing, Terence Choi, Pucky, Steven Choi, Macau-based artist MCZ_Thomas, and Indonesian artist Kathrin Honesta. These works provide diverse perspectives on the black-and-white depictions of Moomin valley, beginning in spring, marking the end of a harsh winter. Much like the core of the Moomin story, the Moomin house offers shelter, comfort, and security to all who seek refuge. These artworks are sure to awaken memories for all Moomin fans. With hope for the unknown, strength is born, and it serves as a reminder for those who have walked through sadness to view the world from a new perspective.
