EVENT DESCRIPTION

A special cultural event is coming to Hong Kong on Sunday, March 22, 2026: a unique screening of Tintin et le Lotus Bleu (The Blue Lotus) at the Hong Kong Central Library.

Organized by the Alliance Française de Hong Kong in collaboration with the Consulates General of Belgium and France in Hong Kong, this event offers a “sound cinema” experience. It features a projection of the original colorized panels from Hergé’s iconic comic album, accompanied by sound design to bring the story to life in an immersive, cinematic way.

The Blue Lotus, the fifth adventure in the Tintin series published in 1935, is widely regarded as one of Hergé’s masterpieces. Set in 1930s Shanghai amid the Japanese occupation of Manchuria, it follows the young reporter Tintin and his friend Chang as they confront opium smugglers, international intrigue, and cultural misunderstandings. Notably, the story was shaped by Hergé’s collaboration with a Chinese student, Tchang Tchong-Jen (the inspiration for Chang), which brought greater authenticity and sensitivity to the depiction of Chinese culture—marking a turning point in the series toward more thoughtful storytelling.

The screening will be in French and is suitable for audiences aged 7 and up, making it a family-friendly activity during the Francophonie Festival in March.

Free admission. Registration required.
