EVENT DESCRIPTION

SHOP Taka Ishii Gallery is pleased to present “TIG Books & Editions”, a showcase of Taka Ishii Gallery’s art publications and special editions, from Oct 23 – Nov 28, 2021. Since 1995, Taka Ishii Gallery has published over 100 art books and catalogues, which serve as documentation of the artists’ creative process and exhibitions, as well as a medium of art expressions. Through these publications, both Japanese and international artists are presented to a wider audience.

Photobooks have been one of the major publications of Taka Ishii Gallery since its first publication in 1995, a photobook Imitation by Daido Moriyama on the occasion of the artist’s exhibition at the gallery. The collection of images condensed in a book effectively outlines the works by categorizing them into themes and time sequences. This is favored by many in this exhibition include Umegaoka Elegy, a diary cum photo book published in 2019 by Nobuyoshi Araki in conjunction with the eponymous exhibition with the gallery, which candidly reflects his daily life through his lens capturing his preferred habitual subjects.

Exhibition catalogues remain another major part of the gallery’s publishing projects, taking up the roles of documenting and archiving exhibitions, accompanied by on-site images chronology, and articles. Book designs complement the style of individual artists’ oeuvres, resulting in a hybrid output that artists of various stages are introduced and promoted across platforms. Taka Ishii Gallery’s Survived! was published in commemoration of its 25th anniversary in 2019 in line with a group exhibition featuring works by 37 gallery artists. As an extension of the exhibition and retrospection, the book listed every project the gallery held since its establishment.

Edition works are considered to be artworks produced in limited amounts and each volume is a unique collectable artwork, on par with the artists’ own creations. The gallery has been part of the creations of several special editions including Nobuyoshi Araki’s 69YK gelatin silver prints, several of Daido Moriyama’s Color silkscreen prints, hand-etched copper plate photogravure prints, and BC by Sterling Ruby in hardcover bound with original self-bleached fabric.

This exhibition features 46 books and 12 edition works published by Taka Ishii Gallery and collaborators, including Case Publishing, TAP, KURENBOH, Omoplata and Little Big Man Books / Smith Andersen North, spanning from 1998 (Doug Aitken’s Metallic Sleep) to 2021 (Tomoo Gokita’s MOO).
