ABOUT THE ARTIST / ORGANISER

TIDE is a contemporary Japanese artist based in Tokyo. His interested in art ignited while reading the manga of Shigeru Mizuki during a stay in Australia, inspiring him to formally embark on his own artistic journey in 2009. TIDE is renowned for his layered paintings, employing both delicate and bold techniques. A recurring motif in his work is a cat character crafted through the composition of painted layers. His pieces simultaneously invite the viewers into a private, intimate emotional realm while reflecting the inner anxieties and chaos of the outside world. Influenced by the 19th century "Intimism" art movement, TIDE's paintings depict familiar domestic interiors. However, he updates these settings to modern contexts with enigmatic imagery that weaves individual narratives. His works juxtapose feelings of comforting warmth alongside alarming disquiet through conflicting emotional states within the same scene. Through his evocative paintings, characterised by built-up textures and themes of duality, TIDE explores the relationship between inner emotions and outer reality, offering a perspective on modern urban life in Tokyo. He creates immersive artistic spaces that encourage audiences to contemplate the balance between intimacy and uncertainty.
