The Story of the HKMoA’s First Collection

2 March - 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Free

EVENT DESCRIPTION

On the 2nd of March 1962, 62 years ago, Hong Kong’s first public art museum was established. It was called the City Hall Art Gallery & Museum, the predecessor of today’s Hong Kong Museum of Art. The beginning of the Museum’s collections can be traced back even further; the very first works were acquired through a donation in 1926──the Chater Bequest.

To celebrate the HKMoA’s birthday, Dr Maria Mok, our Museum Director, will give a special talk on the legendary Chater Collection, the Museum’s founding collection, and share her reflections on the appreciation and study of China Trade Art, as we review the collection journey that started over 60 years ago.
