Seven hundred years ago, Dante Alighieri penned the epic masterpiece The Divine Comedy, depicting a spiritual journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise. The world’s only musical adapted from the eponymous classic will arrive at the Jockey Club Auditorium, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, from September 4–7, 2025.
The Divine Comedy musical fuses rock, opera, and classical genres, enhanced by 3D dynamic projections and mechanical staging, guiding audiences from Hell to Heaven. Director Andrea Ortis innovates boldly while honoring the original, uniting 14th-century timelessness with 21st-century music and stage technology. Composer Marco Frisina interweaves ancient and modern arrangements to spotlight the most dramatic moments, recreating the mystery and grandeur of Dante’s vision.
The Divine Comedy features over seventy 3D dynamic projection scenes, paired with meticulously designed mechanical installations to create a continuously transforming, interactive stage—like a theatre in motion:
- Hell: projections of flames, darkness, and twisted souls surge forward
- Purgatory: layered stairways intersect with shifting light and shadow, vividly portraying the process of spiritual purification
- Heaven: the stage is enveloped in starlight and sacred halos; majestic dome projections create a solemn, reverent atmosphere, stirring a profound sense of spiritual ascension
The production team has also specially designed over 200 magnificent costumes spanning roles such as Dante, Virgil, souls, angels, and demons. Using intricate embroidery, hand beading, and special fabrics, the costumes add rich layers to character portrayal.
Performed by eight exceptionally talented Italian vocalists whose expressive voices seamlessly merge classic verse with modern rock, pop, and opera, the show leads audiences on a breathtaking journey from rock-infused Hell to operatic Heaven.
