EVENT DESCRIPTION

A “show and tell” experiment with colour in time, space and sound.

This July, TechBox returns to Freespace, transforming The Room once again into a lab for media art experimentation.

In a work-in-progress presentation – part of a multi-year project of performances, sharing sessions and public events – cross-disciplinary artist Samson Young collaborates with lighting designers Kinphen Leung and Kaki Lai, sound designers Gut Lam, Caesar Seto and Jaycee Kwok, space designer Tiffany Lau, and musicians Colleen Lee and Linus Fung to explore visual and aural perceptions of colour in time and in space.

Inspired by Joseph Albers’s influential 1960s text Interaction of Color, the creative team explore media technologies with a focus on sound spatialisation and the interaction between visual and auditory senses. How does visual and sonic colour fill a space or bleed through an edge? How does the passing of time take on a variety of hues?

The durational presentation takes place over a period of six hours on each day. The audience are free to enter or leave the venue at any point during this time. Please note that the event will be photographed and video recorded for promotional and archival purposes. This event marks the first phase of the research and development of the project. A full-scale presentation is scheduled to take place at Freespace in 2023.

ABOUT THE ARTIST / ORGANISER

TechBox is a four-year collaborative platform established between Freespace and the School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. The platform brings together media artists, theatre designers, faculty members and students to explore new frontiers of technology and performance and devise experimental creations in a technological context.

In 2021, the opening programme art TALKS tech presented work by audio engineers, sound artists and artists specialising in digital kinetic sculptures and multimedia. From 2022, TechBox offers public and academic presentations demonstrating various stages of the research and development process for creating technological works.
