EVENT DESCRIPTION

The Hong Kong International Youth Artists Society (HIYA) will present a new exhibition – Shape & Consciousness, which will be exhibited at the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre from 23 to 27 November 2023. The exhibition is co-curated by Ringo Wong, Vice-Chairman and Chief Image Office of HIYA, and Chantelle Huang, Society Director Chief Public Affairs and Operating Officer.

Adhering to the mission of welcoming exploration of any forms of art and creative expression for people of different age, culture or nationality, this exhibition will feature 19 artists’ art pieces, showcasing their understanding and expression of “shaping” and “stream of consciousness” through mediums such as painting, sculpture, photography, and video. With diversification in presentation, artists draw inspiration from everyday life and transform these infinite concepts into tangible forms. It also allows the audience to gain a deeper understanding of the diversity and richness of art and culture.

The exhibition displays nearly 50 art pieces by local and international artists, including: Manling Cheung, Fan Chun, Chantelle Huang, Nimchi Yuen, Lam Hoi Yi, Phoebe Peng, Neil Wang and Timothy John Settle, etc.

Highlights of the exhibition include the following multi-mediums works:

·  Exhibiting five of his work, including Body of the Giant, Wind’s Embrace: Resilient Rebirth, Tomb of Eternity, Metamorphosis and Strength in Softness, Fan Chun creates his artwork by on-site live sketching to express the truth, goodness, and beauty of humanity. His unique presentation and techniques communicate the dual principles of “Form and Emptiness”, inspired by Buddhism.

·  Fascinated by visual arts, Chantelle Huang is presenting three of her masterpieces, such as her Ink DanceMountains & Waters collection. Applying European painting techniques with oriental painting features, she establishes her own unique style on her pieces.

·  Eight artworks presented by Manling Cheung aim to explore the connection between the nature of Chinese ink and contemporary art. With the use of China paper as canvas, the art pieces showcase the intertwining of traditional Chinese culture and contemporary perspectives, connecting the past and present, presenting a complex picture of multifaceted identities, while stimulating the audiences’ thinking.

·  The two art pieces exhibited by Dutch visual artist Nimchi Yuen incorporated conflicting elements, yet forming a unique harmony.

·  Artist Lam Hoi Yi’s Dear Demian is presented in the form of performance video documentation, curating a message and forming it as a letter. A letter to the guide – Demian, in response to the artist’s inner cry.

·  Inspired by the legend of the Gondi from India, Phoebe Peng’s Night of Tree uses sparkling stone, garnet, gold foil, plastic paint, and epoxy resin as media to present the piece.

·  Neil Wang displayed a series of four sculptures and paintings, in which Distortion was created with various media such as plastic paint, wood, clay, and paper. The work explores themes of self-identity and self-worth through visual forms, as well as the diversity of one’s positioning and roles in society.Timothy John Settle’s creations display a delicate balance, dominated neither by rigorous technique nor by overwhelming emotion, reflecting the whimsical, eccentric and unorthodox.
