EVENT DESCRIPTION
Udatsu Sushi Hong Kong is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of Shanghai-based artist and designer Sean Wu, Bamboo by Sean Wu, marking his first art presentation in the city. The exhibition is on view from April 2, 2025 to July 15, 2025.
Originally from Guangzhou, 31-year-old Sean Wu has been trained as an architect, and the owner of WILD, a Shanghai-based creative consultancy which produces ravishing, elegant events and installations for a growing list of megacorporation– Audemars Piguet, Chanel, Aesop, New Balance, and Luisa Via Roma. Taking his everyday life as an inspiration, his work is inextricably linked to China’s fast-evolving consumer market. Utilising recycled glass and natural resin as the medium, Wu creates mesmerising art installations and breathes new life into the traditional notion of bamboo—the symbol of purity and innocence. Reformatted and restructured, the materials are moulded into bamboo with lifelike nodes. At a closer look, Sean turns something glasslike and beautiful into shattered, crystalized solidification. From green to brown, the freestanding sculptures mirror the growth stages of the durable, versatile plant. The innovative visuals advocate a tranquil, mindful and sustainable lifestyle against the fast-paced and often fragmented environment many of us are currently experiencing.
The presentation also spotlights a site-specific wall piece titled Bamboo-Spectrum. Newly commissioned by the modern diner, the piece—of which the idea sprouting out of Wu’s desire of “tackling the dimensional limitations of a new sculptural work head-on” serves as an archive of the long-running bamboo sculpture series. The flattened piece explores the possibilities of the repurposed glass as the dominating material of the artist’s creation and revisits the notion of reconstruction and growth. Offering the viewers a sense of visual formalities, the piece, however, provides an alternative space of tranquility and materiality.
Wu has been a strong force in the flourishing creative scene of Southern China. Operating at the intersection of art, design and technology, Wu has exhibited extensively across the globe, including Shanghai, Guangzhou and Milan. In 2021, Wu has been named “China 30 under 30” by Forbes Magazine.
