EVENT DESCRIPTION
HKwalls is thrilled to announce the upcoming exhibition of renowned artist Richard Hambleton at Soho House, from 11 to 28 January 2024. As one of the pioneering leaders in the street art scene, Hambleton left an indelible mark on the art world with his enigmatic and captivating shadow figures. Despite his tragic death in 2017, his artistic legacy endures. “Richard Hambleton: The Last Shadows”, co-curated by Edward Straka, Alasdair Pitt and HKwalls will showcase a captivating collection of Hambleton’s artworks, inviting audiences to embark on a profound exploration of the Shadowman’s evolution and discover the depths of his true artistic self.
The exhibition brings together Straka and Pitt’s precious private collections of Hambleton’s artworks from his final years, alongside the signature autobiographic creations from his early stage. As attendees progress through the exhibition, they will be immersed in the conscious and subconscious minds of Hambleton.
Key highlight pieces from Hambleton’s later years include a pair of standing shadows dubbed “Take This and I’ll Kill You” and the enigmatic yellow Shadowman. Departing from his mysterious black shadow figures on white backgrounds, Hambleton explored the use of bold colours, leading to a sensational exploration of controversies between light and dark, ecstatic, and tragic, love and pain, life and death.
Immersive displays guide audiences through Hambleton’s life through his art, where aesthetics and expression intertwine. The exhibition showcases a comprehensive collection of artworks spanning from his early years to his final creations, including “An Attitude” from his early years and self-portraits from later years. Each piece captures Hambleton’s profound interpretation of physical deterioration, portraying Richard’s transformation from a healthy to debilitated man. His intent was to evoke a profound emotional response in viewers, encouraging them to confront the darker aspects of life.
Hambleton’s ability to use urban spaces as a canvas for social commentary and emotional expression continues to inspire contemporary street artists and serves as a testament to the power of art to engage with societal issues. “Richard Hambleton: The Last Shadows” offers a rare glimpse into the profound and complex world of this legendary artist.
