EVENT DESCRIPTION
To coincide with Art Month in Hong Kong, Young Soy Gallery is proud to present a group exhibition in a vacant office in Central with five Hong Kong artists, including Go Hung, Louie Jaubere, OBSRVR, Plastered 8 and Riya Chandiramani. Titled “RE:URGENT”, the exhibition takes on the urgency to confront and evoke reflections on the inequities and systemic challenges and power structures that govern our day-to-day in a humorous manner. The exhibition will take place at 15/F, Universal Trade Centre, 3 Arbuthnot Road, Central between March 13 – April 6, 2025.
The five featured artists reflect in their artistic practices that artists are not mythical creatures, but are ordinary people who walk among us. They are “contemporary” artists as they live under the same contexts as we do; their artworks are manifestations of their experiences and observations of the same “contemporary” moment we share with them.
While Go Hung’s work examines systemic inequalities, bringing to the forefront the often-overlooked realities of the less privileged, Riya Chandiramani highlights women’s narratives today, calling for the dismantling of societal stigmas rooted in patriarchal and capitalist structures. With humor and wit, Plastered 8 and OBSRVR reflect on the “perfect” systems that keep things in “order”, exposing their inherent absurdities. Through collages of pop-culture and historical fragments on small-scale surfaces, Louie Jaubere invites audiences to closely observe how cultural icons and power structures have been shaped over time, which ultimately influences our day-to-day lives.
Set in an empty office in Central, the heart of the business district of Hong Kong, the exhibition offers viewers an immersive experience. Viewers of the exhibition are encouraged to interact with the artwork and become a part of the corporate backdrop reminiscent of the stereotypical day-to-day of a Hong Konger.
With the artists’ satirical humour, witty manipulation of icons and imagery drawn from both high and low culture, and the immersive nature of the show, the exhibition urges viewers to re-examine carefully the existing conventions and the impacts they bring about.
