RETRO FEST 2.0 l Back to 80s

Hong Kong movies, Cantonese songs, extravagant night life and luxurious meals are all glimpses of the collective memories of Hong Kong in the 80s. As a local fixture since 1904, HK Tramways is a representative and witness of Hong Kong’s developments, much like the iconic cultural pivots and prosperous night life borne from the 80s.
The night time economy has become a hot topic in Hong Kong lately. As one of Hong Kong’s significant landmarks, Hong Kong Tramways has partnered with Freeture Concept and Retro Hub 20 to host the “RETRO FEST 2.0 l Back to 80’s” Nostalgic Bazaar, with Hong Kong in the 1980s as the main theme of the event. The Bazaar will take place at the Hong Kong Observation Wheel and AIA Vitality Park on October 7 and 8, inviting the public to bask in the atmosphere of the nostalgic past and night vibes through locally made goods and workshops.
Vintage Dress Up Giveaway and Tram Party Taking Everyone Back to the Past
Leading up to the “RETRO FEST 2.0 丨 Back to 80’s” Nostalgic Bazaar, there will be two activities immersing the community in the 80s atmosphere. The details are as follows:
Activity 1: “Vintage Dress up – Photo Contest”
Stunned by the beauty of Maggie Cheung’s Qipao in “In the Mood for Love”, or impressed by Chow Yun-fat’s sunglasses and trench coat appearance in “A Better Tomorrow”? Hong Kong Tramways and RETRO FEST invites the public, especially lovers of vintage clothing or dress-up, to participate in the “Vintage Dress-up Photo Contest”, as demonstrated by retro fashion KOL @that.hk.pinup.
From today until October 7th, participants can join the competition by sharing their vintage style outfits with a retro Hong Kong style on their IG story or make a post with the tag #dressup_retrofest! The competition will be open for entries from September 9th until October 7th, and the winner will be announced on October 15th after selection by HK Tramways and RETRO FEST. Activity 2: “Back to Eighties – Golden Tram Party”
Dream of going back in time to relive the nightlife in the 80s? Or jamming to the kind of music Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung listened to at a Disco? Keep an eye out for the DJ Party Tram running across the northern part of Hong Kong Island on the evening of September 23rd.Onboard the DJ Party Tram, DJ Thomas will bring the 1980s pop music through HK Island, bringing everyone back to the nostalgic 80s-night life era.

The Nostalgic Bazaar that Brings Back Memories
As the highlight of the retro activity series, The “RETRO FEST 2.0丨Back to 80’s” Nostalgic Bazaar will contain tailor made decorations and an array of activities to display the charm of Hong Kong in the 1980s. HK Tramways will also have a booth near the Bazaar’s reception to enrich the Bazaar’s scene of Hong Kong in the 1980s. Visitors will be able to browse and purchase HK Tramways products and souvenirs at the booth, including the popular Tramways-edition Monopoly board game and the Ding Ding Cat plush toy. The details of the Bazaar and activities are as follows:
“RETRO FEST 2.0丨Back to 80’s” Nostalgic Bazaar
Visitors of the bazaar are highly encouraged to dress up in fashion and outfits corresponding to 1980s and 1990s trend. Dressed up visitors will also be given a complimentary gift. During the Bazaar, there will also be a series of nostalgic and retro-themed activities, such as:
Event 1: “Old Belongings Exchange”
Join the “Old Belongings Exchange” to repurpose and give value to old items.
From your favorite childhood toys, old comics and novels you read in secondary school, to CDs and cassette players that accompanied your teenage years… Despite these items were buried at the bottom of a drawer with a layer of dust settled on the top, it may be a long-awaited treasure to others.
During the Bazaar, each entrant can bring an old item (value and size not limited) to exchange for another one. Entrants can go through the old items with different stories and from different generations in the Bazaar. You may even discover your favorites and these old items can shine again.
Event 2: “Time Capsule丨Come and Get an Old Item”
Want to buy yourself some nostalgic decorations? The unique time capsule vending machines in the market can help you!
Retro Hub 20 placed time capsule vending machines in different corners of the Bazaar. Among the gachapons selected are nostalgic 35mm slides, vintage badges and old Hong Kong stamps. You are welcomed to get one and explore the past of Hong Kong through these small but nostalgic items.
Event 3: “Upcycling Old Items” Workshops
In recent years, the concept of circular economy has risen in popularity. Many old items can be upcycled into completely different new products through transformation from skillful hands and careful craftsmanship. There will be five workshops in the Bazaar teaching participants how to upcycle old items to ultimately reduce waste and protect the environment. The time and details of the workshop will be announced soon.
Event 4: “Disco 80’s night”
Disco was once a smash hit in Hong Kong, which was full of memories of many teenage boys and girls back then. In order to replicate the night life in the 1980s, the organizer have invited DJ Thomas to host a Disco party in the Bazaar to spread the prosperous Disco culture and the fun of night life during the 80s.
