Prudence Mak: Sea of Life – The Ink Art Journey
28 August 2024 - 2 September 2024
FreeEVENT DESCRIPTION
Following last year’s solo exhibition, Hong Kong artist Prudence Mak is returning with a new series of works in a solo exhibition “Sea of Life: The Ink Art Journey”. The exhibition will be held from 28th August to 2nd September at the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre. This will be the first time Mak’s latest series, which fuses traditional Chinese ink painting with Pop Art, is displayed in Hong Kong. The exhibition will feature her iconic character “Fatina,” including a 2.5-meter tall inflatable porcelain sculpture of Fatina and an interactive ink art storybook, where visitors can interact with the artwork through a touchscreen, integrating this classic character into the ink painting series.
Prudence’s latest series marks her first exploration into blending the traditional Chinese ink painting techniques with contemporary Pop Art aesthetics, utilizing methods like “splashing ink,” “leaving white space,” and “rubbing” to create her works. Constantly challenging the existing paradigms of classical Chinese and modern Western art, she has created a new form of ink art that showcases a fusion of Eastern and Western elements. This exhibition represents a significant milestone in Mak’s artistic journey, as she incorporates over twenty years of design experience and the essence of Western art into her new ink art creations. By merging design, Western art, creativity, and traditional ink painting elements, she aims to offer the audience a fresh and innovative artistic experience.
The exhibition’s theme, “ Sea of Life” is inspired by Northern Song poet, Su Shi’s famous quatrain “Lushan’s Misty Rain, Zhejiang’s Tides《廬山煙雨浙江潮》“, delving into the three stages of pursuing truth in life.
