The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Prosperity and Magnificence – Civilisation of the Sui and Tang Dynasties in Shaanxi Province

EVENT DESCRIPTION

The Tang dynasty, celebrated as a golden age in Chinese history, had Chang’an as its magnificent metropolis. Its openness was the culmination of earlier developments, from Wei, Jin and Northern and Southern dynasties’ integration policies to Sui’s military achievements.

The exhibition features a selection of over 165 sets of artefacts from Shaanxi and Hong Kong. Visitors can experience the splendour of Sui and Tang dynasties, journeying from the gloom of Wei, Jin and Northern and Southern dynasties into the brilliance of Chang’an. The exhibition highlights the grandeur of Tang dynasty, characterised by its openness, innovation and vitality, optimism and confidence, while also unveiling the commercial and military ties to Hong Kong during the era.

The exhibition is the third programme of the General History of China Series, which is co-presented by the Hong Kong Museum of History and Chinese Culture Promotion Office. The series introduces the significant periods of Chinese history in chronological order from the earliest Xia, Shang and Zhou dynasties to modern times, giving the audiences a more concrete understanding of the development and continuity of Chinese history and culture as well as the course of historical development of China.
