Poetry workshop on Diaspora – Memories Look At Me by Beneath Poetry Society
28 July 2024 - 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm
$100EVENT DESCRIPTION
The term ” diaspora ” originates from the Greek word “diasperien,” where “dia-” means “across” and “sperien” means “to scatter.” “Diaspora ” refers to people crossing borders and moving to different places. We are in the crevices of an era. Some stay, some have left, and some are still unsure. Who are you? Where do you come from? These simple questions are becoming increasingly difficult to answer. Some say that poetry is the language closest to the heart. It approaches memories, fantasies, and dreams, hiding all our desires within metaphors.
In this poetry workshop, we will attempt to salvage the unwritten poems from your memories and separations.
“Human time does not turn in a circle; it runs ahead in a straight line. That is why man cannot be happy: happiness is the longing for repetition.” – Milan Kundera, The Unbearable Lightness of Being
Content of the workshop:
(1) Reading poems by poets from Hong Kong and abroad
(2) Sharing experiences of diaspora through cards
(3) Creative activities
Fee: HKD 100/person as a reservation fee (refundable after the event)

Established in 2020, and composed of a group of poets, we hold monthly poetry gatherings to share our emotions and lives through poetry. Our name was inspired by a slogan seen on the streets of Wan Chai that said, “Freedom lies under the paving stones.”
