EVENT DESCRIPTION
Over the years, Hong Kong cinema has produced a great number of visionary fantasy films, many of which are a mixture of wild inventiveness, bold special effects, and creative genre-blending. To celebrate this rich and imaginative legacy, Fantasies in Reality: A Cinematic Journey presents 12 Hong Kong fantasy classics from the 1950s to the post-2000s.
The films in the programme are grouped under five themes: Memories of Light and Shadow revisits Cantonese fantasy period dramas that evoke our collective nostalgia, while Stories Across Time features modern reinterpretations of ancient tales. The Spooky and the Supernatural features representative supernatural comedies from the genre’s heyday; Sci-Fi and Comic Wonders explores wildly imaginative visions that exceeds the laws of time and space; and finally, Dreamlike Cityscapes focuses on surreal fantasies in the modern world. Together, these themes showcase the evolution and diverse facets of Hong Kong fantasy films, inviting audiences to step into what promises to be a wondrous, mind-blowing cinematic journey.
