EVENT DESCRIPTION
Tai Kwun Contemporary is excited to welcome audiences of all ages across Hong Kong to create a new kind of community with their little ones through the interactive installation project Open the Box: Home Sweet Home. Having appeared worldwide from London to Kyoto, Scotland to Berlin, this touring art project will be hosted at Tai Kwun from 21 September to 6 October 2024. This also marks the inaugural programme of the new Open the Box series, designed to explore innovative approaches to community engagement and shape the future of museums.
This joyful and engaging experience, co-created by UK-based artists Abigail Conway and Lucy Hayhoe, invites participants of all ages to come together and build a miniature cardboard town, acting as both architects and interior designers. As part of this special project, families can select a plot, build a house, and decorate it however they like. More than just a craft activity to fill the afternoon hours, Open the Box: Home Sweet Home encourages everyone to explore the meaning of community and the concept of “home” in a fun and creative way.
As families create their houses, they will contribute to a growing “miniature town” at Tai Kwun. Along the way, participants can interact with new neighbours, choose street names, and work together on town projects like a mail service and a local radio station. Over time, each house becomes a key part of this shared, living art project, showing how everyone’s contributions help shape the growing and changing community.
Through this hands-on, participatory project, Tai Kwun and the featured artists invite everyone to rethink what “home” and “neighbourhood” mean—celebrating connection, collaboration, and the joy of building something together from the ground up. Before taking home their creations, families can join a closing party, further deepening the bonds they have formed.
