EVENT DESCRIPTION

Curated by acclaimed local photographer Almond Chuthis exhibition features a diverse array of works from seven local artists who grew up in Hong Kong during the 1970s to 1990s, revealing the depth and unique allure of the city’s artistic spirit.

Inspired by the Chinese saying “a land that shapes its people”, the exhibition One · Square · Water · Soil follows the belief that a region’s climate, soil, and environment give rise to distinct cultural expressions. Cultivating a remarkable group of home-grown artists, the exhibition makes clear how Hong Kong’s singular landscape and history have shaped their perspective. One · Square · Water · Soil revisits some of the most evocative works from the latter half of the 20th century. In addition to these iconic pieces, the exhibition also premiers new art that has been specially created, offering a glimpse into Hong Kong’s contemporary art scene that spans its rich history, present moment, and future evolutions.

Running from 8 March to 13 April 2025 at SHOWCASE, the premier multipurpose venue of HKADC, One · Square · Water · Soil gathers seven artists working in various disciplines, including oil painting, photography and installation, for a captivating range of subjects and forms. The exhibition will also feature 12 sculptures from the late Antonio Mak, offering a rare opportunity to see a collection of his beloved works in one place.

Participating artists: Almond Chu, Antonio Mak, Lulu Ngie, Joseph Chan, Yeung Tong Lung, Fiona Wong, and Eason Tsang.
