EVENT DESCRIPTION
Set in the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong, My Life as McDull follows a piglet child, McDull, who isn’t the smartest, the handsomest, and certainly not the fittest in the neighbourhood. In separate chapters, the pig-faced schoolboy dreams of visiting the Maldives, having a turkey for Christmas dinner, and becoming an Olympic Gold medalist like his hero, the windsurfer Lee Lai Shan. While his fantasies may not become a reality, McDull navigates the understandable limitations and minor disappointments of everyday life with his supportive, albeit overly ambitious, single mother, Mrs McDull.
The character of McDull originated as a comic strip published in Ming Pao Weekly. Resonating strongly with locals at the time, the cartoon by Brian Tse and Alice Mak was then developed into a feature animation in 1998. Upon its theatrical release, the film earned acclaim for its down-to-earth Cantonese usage and word plays, its pop culture references, and its reflections on actual events and the economic difficulties of an ordinary family, portraying a lesser-known side of Hong Kong.
