EVENT DESCRIPTION
On 6 September, Musicus Society extends its well-received heritage series with four string quartet chamber concerts at Matilda International Hospital. The hospital opened in 1907 on Mount Kellett, as a bequest by Granville Sharp to Hong Kong, in memory of his late wife Matilda Lincolne. Cradle of Courage marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, and the historic venue, which was reconstructed after severe bomb damage during the war, provides a fitting backdrop for enjoying the evocative Baroque and modern music performed by Musicus artists. The performances are enriched by guided tours and an exhibition for audiences to learn about Hong Kong’s war history and connections.
Musicus Artistic Director and cellist Trey Lee leads emerging homegrown musicians in these enlightening performances. They include three talented awardees of Musicus’ Young Artist Audition, notably violist Hoi Yan-lok, winner of the 2025 competition, who plays with technical finesse and a wealth of experience as a chamber musician. Together, the musicians will showcase expressive works by Purcell, Prokofiev and Bach, as odes to the resilience, resistance and reconstruction that characterized the turbulent years of wartime.
Through Cradle of Courage, audiences are encouraged to discover lesser-known histories and stories of Hong Kong. The unique heritage experience includes a guided tour and a special exhibition curated by D-Day Hong Kong, which focuses on the war years and charts in parallel the stories of Matilda and the unsung Chinese heroes of the decisive Normandy landings.
The program is funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.
