[Music as Gaming] Eric So Ho-chi: A Private Language Machine

17 January - 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

$200

EVENT DESCRIPTION

Music as Gaming project, is an innovative commissioning programme that reimagines the relationship between composers, musicians, and performance. This platform invites three talented emerging composers from Hong Kong to challenge traditional paradigms of Western music performance by integrating the dynamism and interactivity of gaming into contemporary music composition.

A Private Language Machine is a gamified performance that explores alternative forms of musicking in a playful, democratic manner. In this work, the meaning transcends the written score, emerging instead from the spontaneity of the performers’ decisions in the moment and setting. By granting agency to the musicians, the performance emphasizes their choices while the composer retains significant authorship through the creation of the game’s system and narrative framework. This innovative approach invites audiences to witness the collaborative and evolving nature of musical expression, highlighting the shared authorship between composer and performer.
