EVENT DESCRIPTION

In celebration of the 400th anniversary of the birth of the great French playwright Molière, the HKAF is this year proud to present radical interpretations of two of his major works for free viewing on the Festival website. Tartuffe and The School for Wives are two of the peaks of Molière’s dramatic achievement, and retain a contemporary relevance which these productions highlight.

The School for Wives has a particular resonance in the #metoo era. Braunschweig’s approach to the plays is deeply rooted in the psychology of Molière’s complex characters, which he explores through what he calls the hidden “novel” behind each of the texts. This analysis brings new depth of insight into the strange connection between pious, foolish Orgon and the religious hypocrite Tartuffe, and into the dark madness of the relationship between the jealous husband Arnolphe and his young wife Agnès.

These landmark productions show us a modern Molière, exploring the depths of timeless human frailty and foolishness. These screenings are not to be missed.

Performed in French with English and Chinese subtitles
School for Wives: Approx 2 hrs. This production contains adult content.
